Revolutionary War and The Patriot
“The Patriot” is a movie that set in the time of the Revolutionary War. The colonists struggled constantly for their independence at this time. After the failed negotiations to reason with King George, the colonists decided to fight for it instead of begging for their independence. The colonists’ army was made up of farmers, rebels, and anyone else who was willing to fight. On the other hand, the British army was made up of the best marksmen and well-trained soldiers in the world. Even though the colonists were outnumbered, unskilled, and overwhelmed, they never gave up.
The main character of the movie is Benjamin Martin who is a veteran soldier and a single father of seven children. The movies begins with the colonies in a dispute with the British. Having a strong disagreement witht the British, the colonists gathered for a meeting. Martin says that he is done with bloody war at there. Martin was a war hero for his works at Fort Wilderbess during the French and Indian War. He was well known for his heroism, but he tries his hardest to forget it. Gabriel, Martin’s son, goes off to war without his agreement, but he soon returns home badly injured while fleeing a battle. Gabriel later becomes captured by William Tavington.
Martin went off to war to protect his people, and to keep a promuse he made to Tavington. He earned his own militia and was a commanding officer over people. Martin teaches his militia hit and run guerilla tactics to aid them in battle. Martin and his militia win many battles. The final battle between Martin and Tavington goes down at the battle of Cowpens. Martin and Tavington clash in the midst of a gory fight, and Martin kills Tavington.
The events in the movie are untrue, but they could of happened. The movie follows Benjamin Martin and his battles and run-ins with the British. When Martin and his militia were not on fight, they had a rest. It was the time that they would hear news of other battles of war. The movie also showed the colonists’ strong desire for their independence and what they had to do to achieve it.
The movie depicts the colonists as heros who risk their lives for freedom. The movie shows the British as evil. A slave fighting alongside the Continental Army for his freedom, Occam depicts tha slaves desired freedom as much as colonists. The movie portrays women manukt aiding the men and not interfering with the war.
I had an emotional reaction to this movie. It showed me what a book could not. The movie put me in the shoes of Benjamin Martin, and walked me through his harships and the obstacles that he has to overcome to achieve his desire. A book simply highlights the key events and terms, but does not show the sufferings of the soldiers.
At the end of the movie, the colonists’ side won and finally had freedom. Martin was acclaimed a hero, his family is safe, and he has a bright future to look forward to. This ending shows us that anything is possbile, if one fights for what they believe in.
